Volkswagen claims that the Up! Lite Concept is the world’s most fuel-efficient four seater. It consumes just 2.44 l/100 km on the highway (70 mpg).
The Up! Lite Concept is based on the future new small family from Volkswagen. There are two power sources, a 2-cylinder 0.8-liter TDI engine with 51 hp at 4,000 rpm. Second one is a 14 hp electric motor getting the power from a lithium-ion battery. Combined power output is 65 horsepower.
The Up! Lite Concept is capable of pure electric driving also, the configuration is classified as a full hybrid. Shifting work is handled by a 7-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) like the one used in the new Polo.It is also equipped with a Stop-Start system.
A total range is over 800 km (497 miles) from a 20 liter diesel tank. Weight of the car is just 695 kg. Volkswagen says that first models based on the future New Small Family car will go on sale end of 2011.
