Toyota has made surprising inroads in brain wave technology to drive vehicles. It has actually successfully tested driver brain wave control which works in real time. The Brain Machine Interface (BMI) kit used by Toyota responds to the user’s controlling thoughts in 125 milliseconds rather than the several seconds typical for such kit, used by other companies.
There is a barely noticeable lag between the thoughts and the display and a big plus is that the system adjusts to an individual’s thought patterns. An accuracy rate of 95 percent has been achieved. However, this system is not yet fit to be used in cars, but can be used by the handicapped or elderly in wheelchairs.
This can help reduce the load of taking care of an ageing population and allow wheelchair bound people to be more mobile and independent. Someday the technology may be advanced and used in cars as well, hopefully, calling for hands free driving.
