The Transition flying car – insurance and licence problems

The Transition – a roadable aircraft or flying car – has already undergone successful beta testing and is due to hit the road (and the air) in 2011. It can drive and fly safely and change from one mode to the other very quickly and easily.
However this car has reached a roadblock as far as licensing and insurance is concerned. An ordinary driver’s licence is not going to be enough to drive this baby. Categorized as a Light Sport Aircraft, the Transition, once marketed, will require a Sport Pilot certificate to fly. By giving pilots a convenient ground transportation option, the Transition reduces the cost, inconvenience and weather sensitivity of personal aviation. But what about car drivers?
People will have to get both licences to be able to drive this car. And then there is insurance. An ordinary car insurance will not cover flying risks. Insurance companies will have to come out with a new product which will cover this flying car because a plane’s insurance coverage will not cover road accidents and vice versa.
