Geely plans 1 million Volvo units a year, new plant in China

2010-volvo-s60Ford is still negotiating the sale of Volvo brand and one of the potential winning bidders is a Chinese Geely. In 2008 Volvo sold 380,000 cars around the world. If Geely gets the Volvo brand they plan to produce 1 million cars a year within five years.

That means they have to increase the current production about 2.5 times. How?

Ford officially confirms China’s Geely as its preferred bidder for Volvo

2010 Volvo S80Ford is trying to sell the Swedish Volvo brand and for month’s one of the potential rumored buyers has been China’s Geely.

Today Ford confirmed earlier speculations and named Geely as their preferred bidder for the Volvo brand. That of course does not mean Geely is the final buyer. A lot of things can change during the negotiations.

French Renault is interested in Saturn and Chinese Geely in Saab

saan-saturnWe reported on Tuesday that one of the potential buyers for Saturn is Penske Automotive Group. Even though GM does not see much value in this brand there are plenty of companies who want to buy it from General Motors.

Just like Chrysler might be saved by Italian Fiat, there is now a high chance that Saturn will be saved by French brand Renault. Looks like European automakers are very interested in the big American market.

Beijing 2008 Preview: Geely introduces 18 concept and production models

Some basic models will probably make it into production, but some concepts seem most likely to stay as concepts. Like the Geely GT pictured on the right.

Chinese automaker Geely looking for a foreign partner

geely kingkongGeely Automobile Holdings Ltd. — a Chinese automaker — has announced that it is looking to partner with a foreign car and parts maker, including Japanese ones.

Geely is looking to expand in order to take advantage of growth opportunity outside of its domestic market.
“We started off building and selling cheap cars, but now we are changing,” said Geely chairman, Li Shufu. “We are very, very eager to form alliances.”
