General Motors has big plans with the plug-in extended range Chevrolet Volt. This car will likely change the future of GM in either good or bad way. Hopes are high!
Today General Motors announced that it will invest $336 million in the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant to begin production of the Chevrolet Volt in 2010.
GM needs your help naming the Volt exterior color
We have all seen the official Chevy Volt pictures where it is finished with the silverishgreen color that GM at the moment calls an emerald hue.
But this is not a good name for a color, especially for a car that General Motors has placed very high hopes. As this is the main launch color for the Volt, GM is turning to you for help.
GM’s Chevrolet Volt prototype snapshots
General Motors has now officially released snapshots of its Chevrolet Volt. The very first photos of the pre-production Volt gasoline-electric extended-range hybrid are very close to the earlier images.
The car has a lithium-ion battery pack which will make it a greener vehicle to own and drive. G.M. calls the Volt an extended-range electric vehicle because its electric motor is powered by a lithium-ion battery pack for up to 40 The rest of the changes are going to be merely cosmetic. The car has actually been completed before schedule.
Video: Race for the Electric Car
Yesterday CBS 60 Minutes aired a piece called “Race for the Electric Car”. The interview features Elon Musk of Tesla and GM vice chairman Bob Lutz. Musk shows us the car, talks about their customers and lot of other things.
Lutz tells us that GM was inspired by Tesla. He also talks about the software that runs Volt. Also Fisker Karma and Aptera are mentioned. Futuristic Aptera will be available already this winter.
Chevy Volt now $7500 less thanks to new tax credit
Bob Lutz confirmed few months ago that the Volt will retail for about $40,000 and generate no profit for GM. The company hopes to make money as it rolls out later versions of the vehicle and other plug-in models.
Now there is some good news to all the Volt fans in the states, it’s called the Transportation and Domestic Fuel Security Provision.

GM announces $370 Million investment for new small engine manufacturing in North America
GM will invest $370 million in the U.S. to build a new manufacturing plant for its global 4-cylinder engines in Flint, Michigan. New GM engines will power Chevrolet Cruze and electrify Chevy Volt.
The plant will begin production in the U.S. in 2010, and will be the exclusive manufacturing facility in North America to produce the Chevrolet Volt’s range extending engine.
The investment includes construction of the new 552,000 square foot plant, machinery, equipment and special tooling to support production of the new 4-cylinder engines.
Video: Production Chevy Volt in motion
2011 Chevy Volt represents a new direction for GM. Once they killed the electric car and now they are back with the Volt.
Even though technically Volt is a hybrid it can use only electric power for up to 40 miles. Electricity is stored in lithium-ion battery. Once the battery is empty Volt’s gasoline engine will work as a generator to power Volt’s electric drive unit.
Below we have the first official video of the production Volt in motion. Enjoy!

Concept Volt vs. Production Volt
GM announced today that yesterdays official photos of the Volt were not leaked intentionally. It was not planned and was an accident. We just can’t believe it. It seems that GM is trying to get all the publicity possible.
Reportedly these studio photos were “accidentally” placed on a GM website and then immediately removed when the breach was discovered. How come we have never seen other(boring) model photos placed on their media site accidentally?

2011 Chevy Volt images revealed!
Chevy Volt was suppose to make its first official public debut next week, but for some reason the first photos were released today. Photos feature the car and different GM executives posing with the Volt.
I looks to be in a similar size to the new Chevy Cruze. It has a very aerodynamic front end. Rear lights are very narrow and the whole rear is quit high. Soon we’ll see does it jeopardize the rear view or not. Front end features LED fog lights, mirrors are also in the narrow style like the rear lights. We can see the Volt badge on the rear and on the sides next to the mirrors.
