Spy shots: 2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS prototype

Current generation CLS has been on the market since 2004 and it is time for the second generation to step in. Earlier there were rumors that the new CLS will be based on S-Class instead of E-Class. Judging from these photos it looks like CLS will stick to the E-Class platform, though it will be lengthened so it is bigger than E-Class, but still smaller than S-Class.

Unfortunately photographer only got a good view of the side and rear. Don’t worry as we will be seeing this car a lot more before Mercedes makes it official.

It seems that the rear window is much bigger and the car sits lower than the current version. Rear will go down just like it goes on the current model. Just try to imagine it without that temporary camouflage on the boot. It also looks like the car is going to be shorter compared to the current generation CLS.

Engine options will likely include the new S400 BlueHybrid and V6 and V8 powerplants. Top of the line models will get the usual AMG treat.

By the time new CLS arrives it will go against the Audi A7, Lamborghini Estoque and Porsche Panamera.
