Rumormill: Audi working on R2

Audi’s future “R” lineup rumors include already R6 and R3. Now British AutoExpress claims that Audi is working on a two-seater cabriolet codenamed R2 to take on Porsche Boxster and Mercedes-Benz SLK.

If the rumored model is called R2, then there surely won’t be R3.

R2 will get its chassis ans suspension from the MkV VW Golf. Possible variants also include 4WD and a hybrid version to help Audi reduce C02 emissions.

Engine line-up will include 2.0-liter four cylinder and 2.5-liter five cylinder gasoline units which produce 200 horsepower and up to 380 horsepower(more likely 340 horsepower as in the new TT-RS).

Top speed is limited to 155 mph (250 km/h) and 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) should be around 4.7 seconds.

Overall design should be very similar to R8. If all these rumors are true(which they likely are to some part) then R2 should be available in 2011.

Audi won’t be the only one to use Volkswagen BlueSport concept as basis for R2, rumor is that Porsche and Seat have also showed interest to produce their versions of this compact roadster. Stay tuned for more details.
