More Formula One news ahead of next weeks car debuts. Ross Brawn, team principal of the currently in-limbo Honda F1 team, has revealed that he has been in touch with former bosses at Ferrari to supply the team with customer engines should a buyer be found for the embattled team.
Ferrari has in the past supplied two teams with engines, Scuderia Toro Rosso and Force India F1. However, Force India is switching to Mercedes power plants for the coming season, which leaves a spot open for the
ex-Honda powered cars.
Brawn also said that there is no written contract as of yet, but that Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo and team principal Stefano Domenicali have been very supportive of his inquiry. Brawn has made it clear that he is willing to fall on his sword to see the team continue, and that saving as many jobs as possible is his first priority. Brawn admitted there is more than one interested party in the team, and he feels optimistic about the team’s future. He does not expect the team to test at all this preseason, as adapting a new engine to an existing chassis is a long process. Though it does sound as if Brawn has got a solid plan for the coming years. “We are studying a package of evolutions for 2010, when we aim to step up the ladder. Next year will remain for us a transitional one.”
The prospect of Ferrari engines is sure to help in securing a buyer for the Brackley-based outfit. Here’s hoping for the best for the squad and all of it’s employees. I don’t think I am alone when I say that I hope to see them on the grid this coming Formula One season.
