Porsche 928 GTSAt the Shanghai Auto Show Porsche’s design chief Michael Maur confirmed earlier speculations that Porsche is working on a successor to the front-engined rear wheel drive 928 that was produced between 1978-1995.

This new model won’t replace the 911, but would join Porsche’s model range as a fifth variant.

According to sales and marketing manager Klaus Berning it is one of the sectors of the market Porsche is very interested. New “928″ would go against the likes of Bentley Continental GTC and Aston Martin DBS.

Currently there is no information what will the new 928 be called and when it will be launched. What we know is that it will be based on the Panamera chassis with three doors and a hatchback like design. We expect Porsche to use the same engines found in the Panamera.

Original Porsche 928 was produced from 1979-1995 and 61,056 units were built. At first it was suppose to be a replacement for the 911, but later it was decided that it should be sold side by side with the 911.

Porsche 928 won the 1978 European Car of The Year competition. It is the only sports car ever to win that competition. Top of the line model was 928 GTS, with a 5.4-liter V8 that produced 345 horsepower. 2887 units were built between 1992-1995.
