Nissan’s electric vehicle, Leaf, is expected to boost the bottom-line of the automaker, which has already booked 5,000 vehicles for leasing and is expecting bookings of a further 15,000 units. Nissan is going to start taking orders only next spring, because the car is going to be ready for sale by fall.
Five US states, Tennessee, Oregon, San Diego, Seattle and Phoenix/Tucson, have agreed to put up 2,500 electric vehicle charging stations since there will be so many more Leafs on the road.
Initially all Leafs will be imported from Japan, but eventually, by 2012, Nissan will pump in money ($2 billion) to make the cars in Smyrna, TN. This plant will have a production capacity to make 150,000 electric vehicles and 200,000 lithium ion batteries – and so generate employment as well.
