Here’s proof that Mercedes is hard working on the next generation CLK Cabrio – and of the fact that the coupé’s beautiful sister will get a retractable hardtop. Clearly visible is the joint between the windshield frame and the front edge of the roof.

The wider disguise of the c-post and the longer boot lid are other details that give away the secret of this prototype.

Yet bigger and yet a bit more elegant than the outgoing model, the new CLK twins will be based on the C-class saloon. It goes without saying, however, that refinement will be done to the chassis to meet expectations of the somewhat more ambitious coupé- and cabrio-drivers. Engines will come from the C-class line-up and will include a V8 for a CLK 500. We expect the coupé to arrive at the dealers in summer 2009 with the convertible following just a few months later. When comparing to the Coupe spy shots we saw in June it has new rear lights. So no worries, new CLK won’t be seeing the Duplo style lights. Rumor is that CLK name might be dropped and the next gen. CLK will be called E-Class Coupe.
