Next generation Jeep Grand Cherokee prototype spied

Next generation Grand Cherokee (codenamed “WL”) will ride on a new platform. Ii will be shared with the new Dodge Durango and next generation Mercedes-Benz ML Class.

New ML Class will very likely have different suspension parts and higher end running gear.

There won’t be next generation Jeep Commander. New Grand Cherokee will take its place as it will be offered in 5 and 7 passenger configurations.

New Grand Cherokee will use a similar design as the Trailhawk concept, except it has sharper lines. Power will come from new Phoenix V6 in 3.3-liter and 3.6-liter displacements. Very likely 4.7-liter V8 and 5.7-liter HEMI can also be found under the hood. Even a hybrid power train is a possibility.

Rumor is that tow rating is almost 8000 lbs (3628 kg). As always Grand Cherokee will be offered with 2WD and 4WD.

Production is expected to start beginning of 2010 with sales starting soon after.
