Jaguars and Land Rovers will now be built in aluminum instead of the heavier steel, leading to as much and 40 percent reduction in the weight of the car. This will result in greater fuel efficiency as well as less carbon dioxide emissions. Tata Motors, which owns the brand, is going to extend this technology to other models as well to become more green.
Apart from that Jaguar and Land Rover will be trying out hybrid powertrains to add to the green credentials. The XJ line which should be out in 2011 may use a kinetic energy recovery system and Land Rover has been working on and electric rear axle drive which could show up in the new LRX compact Range Rover. Jaguar has been using aluminum since 2003.
