Jaguar setting the sails to Super again?

jaguar-xj220-1The rumormill grinds 24/7, producing all kinds of flour. But this one, presented by Auto Express, makes probably too tasty a bread to ignore. They suggest that Jaguar is going for a new XJ220.

We have heard that the new owner of the wild car, Tata, considers the return of the F-Type. More likely the new supercar that’s going to be brought out within a year or so shall be a mid-engine concept, adhering to the block of cult created by the legendary XJ220.

It won’t be as super as, say, a Lambo or a Ferrari and cannot be compared with Aston Martin’s aspirations with the luminous step taken with the One-77. But it will surely be sharing the playground with Audi R8 and the likes.

If the XJ220 is really going to be resurrected, it will use an new aluminum chassis complete with the XFR’s 503 hp supercharged 5-liter V8. That should easily guarantee the car an acceleration time to 60 mph less than four seconds. The XFR recently pulled an outrageous 225 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats, so lack of an in-house power plant won’t be a problem.

And to spice things up, the good people at Auto Express have also heard, that the new Jaguar will be thinking green, trying to run on biofuels to keep the CO2 emissions under 300 g/km. If the supercar is made, it will be called the XE and considering the background of Ian Callum, the design ought to be fabulous one too.

The car could be presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 2010. These two pictures are renderings organized by Auto Express.
