Friday, the 26th of December, 2008 is a day which Toyota would choose not to remember. The Japanese firm has announced a recall of nearly 122,000 cars in China due to a certain fault which may result in loss of steering control.

The Tianjin FAW Toyota Motor Company said that a total of 121,930 vehicles contained a fault that could cause electrical failure in the power steering.

The Crown and the Reiz manufactured in 2005 and 2006 were the ones most affected by the fault. But these cars from the Toyota line up were not the only ones that were hit by this snag. Even Toyota’s premium branch, Lexus, wasn’t spared as over 5000 cars from its stable were recalled for a very similar problem. The cars from Lexus that were recalled were made between 2004 and 2006. The notice of the recall was posted on its website.

This recall has seriously dented the otherwise bullet-proof reliability of Toyota and individuals have questioned the after-sales and service of the Japanese firm. Toyota even observed its first operating loss in 71 years for this current business year. Not the best way to ring in the New Year we’d say.
