GM Volt Mileage

General Motor’s Volt is expected to contribute significantly to reducing carbon dioxide emissions and be more environmentally friendly. The car is likely to give more than 100 mpg in combined highway and city driving. According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s methodology for fuel ratings, this would work out 230 mpg in city driving alone.

On a single battery charge alone, the Volt can go 40 miles and then a small gasoline engine starts recharging the battery. According to the automaker, 80 percent of drivers do not commute more than 40 miles and so will not need to use the gasoline engine at all.

The EPA has not confirmed the figures but lauded the company for doing what it can for the environment. Nissan also hit back by saying that according to the same standards its Leaf would give 367 mpg. While the Volt is expected to cost around $40,000 ($7,500 would be given as a tax credit), Nissan’s Leaf would cost between $25,000 and $33,000. Hopefully the competition will benefit the end users.
