GM has earlier sold GM certified cars via eBay’s site. American laws are such that an automaker is not permitted to sell new or used cars directly to consumers, hence GM’s plan to sell the cars through eBay.

Talks are still going on between the two companies, but eBay is ready to support the new GM’s pilot project which will be limited to California in the initial stages. Under GM’s plan, California GM dealers could put their new vehicle inventories on the auction site and eBay users would bid on them. Each vehicle would also have a “Buy it now” price for shoppers who don’t want to risk losing out in the bidding war.

This initiative should give a fillip to the car maker as well as be of benefit to customers who can check prices online and even see what the average price is that a car actually sells for, before placing a bid on eBay.

Dealers may be able to put in their own “Buy it now” price and as competition hots up, it will be the customer who should eventually benefit by being able to buy the car he wants at a better price or get a better deal And if he does not want to buy via the internet, he will still be able to compare various prices and benefits given by different dealers so that he can get himself a good deal. Should be a win-win situation for all parties concerned.
