Despite poor car sales worldwide, Ford is experiencing early success with its new global model, the Fiesta. The Fiesta, designed and developed in Europe, is the first model to designed go on sale in Ford’s global markets.

In the two months that it has been available in Europe, Ford has sold more than 42,200 Fiestas despite the poor economy.

The Fiesta has quickly become Ford’s second best-selling model, behind the Focus. Although sales are down industry wide, the Fiesta’s success has helped Ford increase its market share in the EU for the month of November, second only to Volkswagen.

The company claims that about 50% of Fiesta buyers are choosing upscale trim packages, adding to overall sales figures.

The Fiesta is currently only available in Europe and South Africa. In early 2009, it will go on sale in China, Australia, and New Zealand, with the remaining Asian markets seeing it in 2010. 2010 is also when the ailing US market and other North American markets will get their first taste of the new Fiesta, built in a retooled truck plant in Mexico. I, for one, am looking forward to it.
