Ruf 3400K coupeRuf is not just another tuner working on tuning packages. Ruf Automobile GmbH is an automobile manufacturer. Rufs are built from unmarked Porsche chassis. When a chassis arrives, Ruf builds their own independent work into the car.

Because Ruf installs many of their own-made parts, the company is recognized as a manufacturer by the German government.

Now this German supercar maker is working on something that is hard to believe, but considering all the latest trends was probably just a matter of time. Soon Ruf will be offering all electric Cayman. Yes that means Porsche Cayman gets electric and looses its boxer engine.

Are you surprised? If you are, then read this:

In 1901, while employed at Lohner Coach Factory, Ferdinand Porsche designed the “Mixte”, a series-hybrid vehicle based on his earlier “System Lohner-Porsche” electric carriage. The Mixte broke several Austrian speed records, and also won the Exelberg Rally in 1901 with Porsche himself driving. The Mixte used a gasoline engine powering a generator, which in turn powered electric hub motors, with a small battery pack for reliability. It had a range of 50 km, a top speed of 50 km/h and a power of 5.22 kW during 20 minutes.

Electric Porsche doesn’t sound that strange at all anymore.

Ruf Cayman should offer very serious competition to Tesla Roadster as Ruf already is a well known name with a very long history and an established client base.

According to Auto Motor und Sport electric Ruf Cayman will get a (150 kw) 205 hp electric engine with 480 lb-ft that takes it from 0-60 in around 4 seconds. Top speed will be about 125 mph (200 km/h) and a range between 156-187 miles (250-300 km). Ruf will introduce the electric Cayman already in October. For comparison Tesla Roadster jas 175 KW, but as the planned electric Cayman has more torque it is a close call which one is faster. Electric Cayman will most likely be based on the Ruf 3400K Coupe.

If we could buy one we would get the electric Cayman over Tesla Roadster anytime. As Germans say: “Bleiben Sie auf dem Laufenden”
