smart fortwo electric drive large-scale series production to begin in 2012

smart fortwo electric driveDaimler owned smart has announced that large-scale production of the all-electric smart fortwo will start in 2012 in Hambach, France.

The Hambach plant has 1,600 workers and last during last year they produced 140,000 units of the tiny smart fortwo. In September 2008, the brand celebrated its tenth anniversary along with the 1-millionth smart fortwo produced at the Hambach plant.

Electric smart to see the world in 2009

Mercedes divorced with Chrysler recently and now it concentrates on it’s own brands such as “smart”. Founded by Daimler AG and Swiss watch company Swatch as a joint-stock enterprise in 1994, smart created a lot of headache to both shareholders.

After several years Swatch left the project leaving Daimler alone with this brand. Then there were endless losses and unpopular coupe/roadster and forfour hatch. Finally, last year they launched the second generation of their popular city-flea smart fortwo and presented it in US, which still remain the largest car market in the world.

Smart Updates Its Model Range To Include Micro Hybrid Drive

Smart ForTwo Micro Hybrid Drive
From October 2008 the standard equipment of the 45 kW/61 bhp and 52 kW/71 bhp petrol-engined smart fortwo models will include micro hybrid drive (mhd) technology with a user-friendly automatic start-stop system.

This reduces the NEDC consumption of the two naturally aspirated engines by an average of 8 percent. In city traffic fuel savings of almost 20 percent are even possible. Furthermore, from the autumn of 2008 the smart fortwo cdi will be equipped with a closed diesel particulate filter that almost completely eradicates particulate emissions.

Smart ForTwo gets impressive results in IIHS crash test

The Smart car is getting a lot of attention for its small size and style, and now it’s earning impressive crash test ratings. In recent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tests, the 2008 Smart Fortwo, the smallest car for sale in the US market, earned the top rating of good for front and side crash protection. Its seat/head restraints earned the second highest rating of acceptable for protection against whiplash in rear impacts.

Smart Fortwo is classified a microcar, meaning it’s smaller even than minicars. Weighing about 1,800 pounds, the Smart is more than 3 feet shorter and almost 700 pounds lighter than a Mini Cooper. It weighs about a third as much as one of the heaviest vehicles the Institute has tested, the BMW X5, a midsize SUV.

Electric Smart ForTwo is in the testing

Last summer Smart unveiled three new concept versions of its second-generation ForTwo minicar, all based around an ultra-efficient electric drivetrain. The trio included a regular petrol hybrid, a diesel hybrid and a zero-emissions electric vehicle.
The all-electric ForTwo, features a 30kW motor powered by a sodium-nickel-chloride battery and a range of 115km(about 70 miles) on a single charge.

Stretched over twice its normal length of 2695mm to 5100mm (17 feet) long, the Smart ForTwo has been reborn as a promotional vehicle targeted to soft drink makers who can brand the Smaaart with their style and rent on a daily basis.
Despite the obvious increase in size, the so called Smaaart was built using a lightweight allow chassis therefore allowing it to retain the original 600cc engine without sacrificing motorways speeds up to 80 mph.

RENNTECH 7.22 Takes Smart Performance to New Levels

RENNTECH’s 722 tuning package for the Mercedes SLR McLaren supercar has been generating a lot of attention recently, as has RENNTECH’s appointment as the American agent for the Mercedes-Benz McLaren 722GT club racer and SLR.Club Trophy USA series.

Building on these runaway successes, RENNTECH has released details of an exciting new project called the 7.22. Based on the new Smart ForTwo, the 7.22 is powered by two (2) 1000cc, 3 cyl. Smart engines, each mated to its own 5-speed, automated transmission.
