Desperate times call for desperate measures and it seems that Americans are setting fire to their cars for insurance because they cannot make the payments on their cars and this way they hope to get a quick insurance claim settlement. The vehicles are reported as stolen and they are left in places where hopefully the police (or somebody else) will find them.
As a result the number of insurance claims have been steadily rising and insurance companies are now scrutinizing all the cases minutely, so that they are not becoming victims of fraud. Some people are quickly caught as well. Historically, such cases of arson go up as people fall behind on car payments, experts say.
Vehicles have been found ablaze in the Nevada desert, many cars have been found dumped in a Miami canal and a BMW was even discovered buried in a field in Texas. Some vehicles have been parked in the path of a hurricane, in the hope that the hurricane will destroy them.
