BMW considers Z2 roadster based on 1-series

Everything seems to be getting smaller and more fuel efficient. SUV’s get smaller versions and they sell quit well. BMW has X5 and its smaller brother X3. Audi has Q7 and Q5, VW has Touareq and Tiquan.

Now Autozeitung reports that BMW plans to produce a Z2 roadster that will be based on the platfrom of the 1-series.

Z2 would come with a soft fabric roof and the styling would most likely be similar to Z4. Engines would be borrowed from the 1-series and we are pretty sure that BMW’s fuel efficient diesel will also be offered on the Z2 if it ever enters the production.

We are not sure is there really a market for another roadster, but surely BMW has done more market research. Z4 already is a small roadster and making another one even smaller makes us ask who can be fitted in there and who are the customers? Our guess is that the key factor will be lower price compared to the Z4 as you can’t make the Z4 much smaller(at least the interior).

With the Z2 the whole BMW lineup would include five open-top models(current ones include 1-series cabrio, Z4, 3-series cabrio, 6-series cabrio).

Currently the project waits for an approval from the top heads at BMW. Most likely the car would be first introduced in 2011 or 2012in Frankfurt Motor Show.
