The German magazine Auto Motor and Sport and the French title L’Automobile have been carrying reports of Audi working on a new electric car. However, Audi’s CEO recently said that it will take time for electric vehicles to enter the mainstream and become more affordable.

It is entirely likely, given the current environmentally friendly scenario, that Audi is working on a electric vehicle which will sport either a pure electric set-up or a range-extended design, perhaps with an internal combustion engine hooked up to a generator.

The R8 would probably be built at Audi’s factory in Stuttgart. It would also probably look like the concept V12 turbo-diesel model. If rumors are the true, then the car will make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor show later this year.

But this isn’t by any means concrete as Audi officials have reportedly denied such plans in later interviews. But with the shift in focus toward more environmentally friendly vehicles, there might well be some truth in them.
