Audi is working on a R3 Roadster

In March we reported that the rumored Audi R4 will be cancelled as mid-engine R4 might harm sales of Porsche’s Cayman and Boxster.

Even though R4 plans got cancelled R8 is still getting a smaller brother called R3.
Wouldn’t that jeopardize Porsche sales? As the R3 is rumored to be powered by a 4-cylinder turbocharged engine we are sure that for some reason it would be less powerful than the Cayman and Boxster.

Audi is working on the R3 with Volkswagen who also has a plan on introducing a smaller roadster. No information on when will we see the R3, but Volkswagen is planning on introducing its concept at 2008 LA Auto Show. Volkswagen’s version would compete strongly with Mazda MX-5 in price and performance.

As the two will share lot of components we can get some hints on Audi R3 from the LA Auto Show. R3 is expected to hit roads by 2013.

No information on what’s going to happen to the TT yet. Audi still has four years to decide before the R3 production starts.
