Asian auto makers are on a roll. Back in 1999 Toyota, Nissan Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Subaru, Mazda, Mitsubishi and Suzuki collectively held a 25.8% market share in the U.S.
Last year their market share was 47.9% up by 2.7 points from 2008 and all signs are showing they will pass the 50% mark this year.
Majority of their gain has come at the expense of domestic manufacturers GM, Ford and Chrysler Group. Their market share was last year 44.8% down from 69.8% back in 1999.
European automakers have also gained share, but a lot slower than Asian. In 1999 their share was 4.4% and last year it was 7.3%.
